Step 1
Note how heavy the picture you want to hang is. This will determine the picture hanger you need to use. Also, take into consideration the material you are hanging it on and whether or not it will be secured into a wall stud.
-
Step 2
Look at the differences between the picture hangers available. There are lots of picture hangers on the market, but one of the most popular styles is a small metal hook that is held to the wall by a nail going through a small hole above the hook. There are slightly different looks for different weights. For example, the 100-lb. capacity hook has three small holes for nails to add support.

Step 3
Consider a wall anchor if you are not going to be securing the picture hanger into a stud. The anchor goes into the wall and has small feet that brace against the wall, adding a level of security to the picture hanger. This is preferred for small to medium size pictures that can't be hung on a studless wall.

Step 4
Make sure to never go beyond the weight limit of the picture hanger. It can result in the picture falling from the wall and damaging not only the picture, frame and glass, but also the wall. This can be a costly repair to make, simply because you weren't thorough in your planning or in following instructions.
