Step 1
Know the components of your particular fireplace. There are many different fireplace enclosures, including glass doors, screens or cast iron components. Also, be aware of the metal, usually cast iron, or other materials your fireplace is made of. This will make a difference in how hot you want to get your fire.
-
Step 2
Notice the ventilation system on your fireplace. With glass and cast iron fireplace enclosures, there is often a ventilation window that can be moved to shut out or let in oxygen. This allows you absolute control over the fire, so you can control how long and how hot it burns.
-
Step 3
Keep your fireplace clean. If the ventilation window is covered in soot or has debris blocking it, it will not function properly. This is also true of all the other components of the fireplace. It is a good idea to have the fireplace, flue and chimney cleaned at the end of each summer.

Step 4
Practice good fire safety. Make sure that everyone in the family practices smart fire safe behaviors to avoid burns, house fires or other injuries. This should include keeping small children away from the fireplace, adults only lighting fires and lighting fires properly.
