Origami is an ancient Japanese art in which the artist folds paper into intricate forms. An origami Valentine's Day box makes a beautifully simple gift for someone special. All you need are a few simple supplies and some easy directions.

Difficulty: Easy
Instructions

Things You'll Need:

  • Card stock
  • Scissors
  • Scoring tool
  • Ruler
  • Bone folder
  • Ribbon

Make the Bottom of the Box

  1. Step 1

Cut a 12-by-12-inch piece of paper to 11 inches by 11 inches. Use a solid-colored piece of card stock for this, since it forms the bottom of the box.

  2. Step 2

Score the paper at 5 ½ inches one way, then turn the paper 90 degrees and score it at 5 ½ inches the other way. When you finish scoring the paper, you should have a cross on your piece of card stock.

  3. Step 3

Fold the card stock on both score lines. Use a bone folder or a large Popsicle stick to press the fold down well.

  4. Step 4

Open the card stock back up, and fold the bottom right corner into the middle point of the paper. Do the same thing to all the other corners. When you finish folding, you should have a smaller square.

  5. Step 5

Take the edge of the square that's closest to you and fold it toward the middle, then turn the square around and do the same thing to the other edge. Open up the box and do the same thing to the other two sides, except this time fold in the opposite direction. After you finish the second set of folds, open the whole piece of paper up again.

  6. Step 6

Follow the technique outlined in the Expert Village video "Assembling the Base for an Origami Valentine's Box" to assemble the bottom of your box (see Resources below).

  7. Make the Top of the Box

  8. Step 1

Select a randomly patterned or coordinating solid piece of card stock for the top of your Origami Valentine's Day Box. Cut the paper to 11 ½ inches by 11 ½ inches. Score your piece of card stock at 5 ¾ inches, then turn the paper 90 degrees and score it at 5 ¾ inches again.

  9. Step 2

Refer to Steps 3 through 5 for how to fold the top of your Origami Valentine's Day Box. Then watch the Expert Village video "Assembling the Top for an Origami Valentine's Box" for how to assemble the box top (see Resources below).

  10. Step 3

Finish your Origami Valentine's Day Box by wrapping it with a piece of organdy ribbon.
