Sugar skulls are a traditional art from Mexico that are usually made to decorate and celebrate the Day of the Dead (sort of like Mexican Halloween). These skulls are made of sugar then decorated in many ways. After making and forming the skulls, they must be baked in order to become hard. Here are some steps on how to bake sugar skulls.

Instructions

Difficulty: Moderately Easy
Step1
Place playing cards on a baking sheet. You will need one playing card per skull. Line the skulls evenly on the baking sheet about 1/2 inch apart. Make sure they are laying with their faces upwards.
Step2
Warm the oven to a very low heat. Do not overheat the oven or it will completely melt the sugar skulls.
Step3
Place the baking sheet of skulls into the warm oven on low heat. You are not actually going to bake the skulls. You are placing them in the warm oven in order to caramelize the sugar to make them hard.
Step4
Prop the over door open about an inch while the skulls are in the oven. This will help the oven to produce a dry heat. Dry heat is better for caramelizing the skulls.
Step5
Leave the skulls in the oven for 10 to 20 minutes until they harden.
Step6
Remove the skulls from the warm oven. Let them cool down for a few minutes, then decorate them as you wish.
Step7
Use them to decorate for the Day of the Dead or Halloween.
