Sparklers are a must-have among your fireworks when celebrating the fourth of July, especially with younger children. However, there is a correct way to light them safely. The following will show you how to light sparklers.

Difficulty: Moderate
Instructions

Things You'll Need:

  • Sprinklers
  • Lighter
  • Incense stick
  • Bucket of sand or water
  1. Step 1

Choose the sparkler that you want to use. There are several to choose from including basic metal sparklers up to multi-colored bamboo sparklers.

  2. Step 2

Hold the sparkler with one hand, keeping it a safe distance away from your body at arms length. Keep it away from others as well and make sure that you are not pointing the sparkler at anyone.

  3. Step 3

Light an incense stick or "puck lighter" with a lighter or match until the tip turns red.

  4. Step 4

Position the sparkler so it is at a horizontal angle and lower the tip just slightly.

  5. Step 5

Use the incense stick to light your sparkler. This allows you to keep the sparkler at arms length as you light it. Alternatively, you can light it with a lighter or match.

  6. Step 6

Keep the sparkler away from your body. Move it around and play with your sparkler as you enjoy watching it, but keep it away from other people to avoid injury.

  7. Step 7

Throw the sparkler in a bucket of water or a bucket of sand instead of throwing it on the ground. You can also throw it in a metal container or tray. When you are done celebrating with your sparklers and they have cooled, then you can throw them out.

Tips & Warnings
  • Never light a bundle of sparklers at one time, as the fireworks flames could get out of hand. To be safe, always light one sparkler at a time.
  • Do not touch the burnt end of a sparkler after it goes out. This could cause a severe burn.
  • Keep your sparklers away from anything flammable such as alcohol, hair spray or gasoline.
