Any comic serious about breaking into the business will need to network. Networking provides job connections, referrals and a chance to get your first showcase. For many comics, however, it's easier to work an audience than to network. A few simple tips can get you started.

Difficulty: Easy
Instructions
  1. Step 1

Practice until your act is perfected and ready to show. If your act fails to impress, all the networking in the world won't get you booked anywhere.

  2. Step 2

Offer to emcee gigs. Club managers can always use a free open mike host. Hosting other comedians is a great way to get to know them and tap into their network.

  3. Step 3

Introduce yourself to other comics. After the show, even if you haven't performed, introduce yourself and tell them how much you enjoyed their set. Drop them an email occasionally. Soon you may even be able to sit down to coffee.

  4. Step 4

Barter services with other comedians. Currying the favor of more successful comedians is a great way to get your shot at the spotlight. For example, offer to drive established comedians to out of town gigs in exchange for unpaid opening slots on stage.

  5. Step 5

Ask questions and listen to every conversation. More experienced comics can clue you in to out of town open mikes, new clubs looking for comics and pointers.

Tips & Warnings
  • Be patient. Networking doesn't pay off overnight. Keep making contacts, making calls, trading favors.
