Building a snowman is one of the rites of childhood. The first snow of the year is a great time to build a snowman. You can decorate the snowman in many ways. You can get creative and make a snowman family or you can be more traditional with your snowman.

Difficulty: Easy
Instructions
  1. Step 1

Make sure that your snow is good snow for a snowman. The snow should be wet and should pack together easily.

  2. Step 2

Begin by making a snowball to roll. You want to press the snow in firmly before you begin rolling the snowman.

  3. Step 3

Roll the snowball until it reaches the desired size for the base. You should change directions occasionally so you get a true ball shape.

  4. Step 4

Secure the base of the snowman by packing snow around the underneath part of the base. You want the base to be wide and solid to support the rest of the snowman.

  5. Step 5

Smooth the fronts and the sides of the snowman so that the base appears to be round. You can pack snow into any holes that may have formed as you rolled.

Tips & Warnings
  • Rolling down a hill may make it easier to roll, but it can be more difficult to get a perfect ball shape.
  • If you are building a big snowman you may need a partner to help you push the snowball once it gets large. Do not forget that you will need to lift the remaining two snowballs on top of the base.
  • Dress warmly and wear gloves to avoid frostbite.
