How to Pick the Style of Frames for old Pictures

Antique or heritage photography can provide a decorative addition to your home while at the same time preserving your family or local heritage. If you have old photographs you want to frame, keep the antique style and aesthetic in mind as you choose framing options to complement the photograph and enhance your home decor.

Difficulty: Moderately Easy
Instructions
  1. Step 1

Choose a color of frame that draws attention to the subject of the photograph without blending in. If the photograph is sepia hues, there may be some golden colors you want to draw out, but choose a frame that is predominantly brown with some lighter tans rather than predominantly tan.

  2. Step 2

Choose a style of frame that conforms to a more antique aesthetic rather than a contemporary design. Wooden frames are obviously a better choice for heritage frames than plastic, although gold frames can also work.

  3. Step 3

Look for frame styles that match the content of the picture. If the picture is a landscape or contains outdoor scenery, you may want to choose a more rustic or barn wood frame, while if the picture is a posed portrait you may want a more polished and ornate frame.

  4. Step 4

Use matting to add styling to the photograph. You can use matting to accent the antique qualities of the photograph by framing the picture on top of a mat to show the rough edges of the photograph, or by choosing a styled mat with design embellishments or a cut-out shape.
