Homemade bread or rolls are an excellent addition to any menu. They're also great for sharing at family get-togethers, at church pot-lucks or any other gathering where food is a part of the celebration. Though yeast rolls take some advance preparation, the steps are easy to do even if you're not an accomplished baker.

Difficulty: Easy
Instructions

Things You'll Need:

  • 3/4 cup sugar
  • 1 cup vegetable shortening
  • 2 tsp. salt
  • 1 cup boiling water
  • 2 eggs
  • 1 cup lukewarm water
  • 6 cups flour
  • 1 package of yeast
  • Extra-large mixing bowl
  • Wooden spoon
  • Rolling pin
  • Muffin pan
  1. Step 1

Use an extra-large mixing bowl and combine 3/4 cup of sugar, 1 cup of vegetable shortening and 2 tsp. of salt.

  2. Step 2

Put some water on stove to boil. You can use either a tea pot or pan, whichever you have on hand. In the meantime, add 1 packet of yeast to 1 cup of lukewarm water and let stand 5 minutes. In a separate bowl, beat the eggs and set aside.

  3. Step 3

Measure 1 cup of boiling water and pour into the shortening mixture. Stir the yeast mixture vigorously in the cup and add to the bowl. Continue to stir ingredients until shortening is melted.

  4. Step 4

Add the beaten eggs and gradually begin adding 6 cups of flour, stirring well. Knead together after all flour is added, cover and place in refrigerator for at least 2 hours.

  5. Step 5

Spread flour on your work surface area and rolling pin. Grease your muffin pans and pre-heat your oven to 400 degrees Fahrenheit. Knead the dough on the floured surface and break off a small portion to work with.

  6. Step 6

Use rolling pin to spread the dough out flat and cut into strips. Make sure that the strips are not too wide nor too thin. Roll the strips into a pinwheel shape and place into the greased muffin pans. Repeat until all dough has been cut into strips and rolled.

  7. Step 7

    Bake for 15 minutes.

Tips & Warnings
  • This recipe can easily be doubled or tripled, depending on your needs.
  • If you prefer the rolls to be a little sweeter, you can increase the sugar to 1 cup. Adding honey is another way to give these rolls a touch of sweetness.
  • When you stir the dough, be sure to stir it well. A wooden spoon works best.
  • Add a little more flour to your work surface area if dough sticks to it when you roll or cut the dough.
  • If you want the rolls to be uniform, use a ruler to measure each strip.
  • It's totally optional, but you can brush the tops of the rolls with melted butter before baking. You might even want to try garlic butter or adding other spices.
