You can use comment boxes in Excel to annotate a cell. The comment box, by default, is a yellow rectangle. To give your Excel file some pizzazz, you can change the shape of the comment box.

Instructions

Difficulty: Moderately Easy

Things You’ll Need:

  • Microsoft Excel 2003

Step1
Insert Menu Begin by inserting a comment. To do that, click in the cell to which you want the comment attached. Then click on Insert in the top menu bar, and click on Comment.
Step2
Comment Box Inserted The comment will appear with the name of the owner of the software. You can keep the name or delete it. Type in your comment.
Step3
Add Drawing Toolbar You will be using the Drawing toolbar. To recognize it, the Drawing toolbar has an “AutoShapes” button on it. If the Drawing Toolbar is not displaying, click on View in the top menu bar, hover your pointer over Toolbars, and then click on Drawing.
Step4
Select Comment Box Select the Comment box by clicking on any of the borders of the box.
Step5
Change AutoShape With the Comment box selected, click on the Draw button (not the AutoShapes button) on the Drawing Toolbar, point to Change AutoShape, and then make a selection.
Step6
Shape Sample You may need to reshape your selection, which can be done by grabbing a corner and dragging it in or out.

Tips & Warnings

  • When you double click the border of the comment box, the Format Comment dialogue box appears from where you can adjust the font, alignment, line color, margins, and more.
