The underarm hook takedown is a Brazilian jiu jitsu (BJJ) technique that enables you to take down an opponent who throws a wild punch. Untrained fighters commonly throw their punches very wide or high to gain momentum and these types of punches are easy to counter with BJJ techniques like the undearm hook. Just dodge the punch and use the space to grab your opponent.

Difficulty: Moderate
Instructions
  1. Step 1

Dodge the punch being thrown by your opponent. If your opponent is throwing a punch with his left hand, step out to avoid the punch and use your right arm to grab under his left arm and keep his arm suspended in the punch position.

  2. Step 2

Place your right foot between your opponent's legs and bring your left arm around in a bear hug to meet your right hand in the center of his back. Clasp your hands together.

  3. Step 3

Lift your opponent slightly off balance and shift around to his right side. Now your legs should be straddling his right leg and your hands should be clasped at his left side just above the waist.

  4. Step 4

Use your left foot to sweep his right leg and bring him down to the ground.

  5. Step 5

Maintain control of the fall to the ground. You will go down with your opponent, so make sure that you stay on top and that when you reach the ground, you get your feet in position on the ground to enable quick movement.
