Calculators are not only good for calculations but a person can also have some fun with the by learning to spell out or write words with the numbers on the screen. It takes a bit of creativity and imagination but it can help pass the time in that boring mathematics class.

Instructions

Difficulty: Moderately Easy

Step1
Establish the calculator alphabet. You need to turn the calculator upside for this to work. The list is a bit long but here it is; the O equals an o, the 1 is an l, the 2 is a z, the 3 is an E, the 4 is an h, the 5 is an S, the 6 is a P, the 7 is an L, the 8 is a B, the 9 is a G.
Step2
Write these letters down so you remember their corresponding position.
Step3
Type the numbers that match the letters into the calculator backwards. For instance 7738 spells "bell" and so on. See the resources section for more words you can write with a calculator.
Step4
Turn the calculator upside down to display the written word on the calculator. If it does not display the word correctly double check the keys you pressed in Step 1 for any errors.

Tips & Warnings

  • Understand that 4 and 6 are lower case letters but all the others are the capitalized form of the letters.
  • Writing words with a scientific calculator will not work, it must be a regular calculator.
