Managing celiac disease (a gluten allergy) in children can seem like an uphill battle, especially when you're dealing with a child who's already a picky eater. Luckily, there are a few things that you can do to help your child manage her symptoms more effectively. The key is understanding what exactly a gluten allergy entails and then educating yourself and others around you about products that contain gluten.

Step1
Learn to read labels. Products that contain gluten are required to say so on their packaging, so always read the label. Many basic foods like meat, fish, milk, eggs and cheese are usually gluten-free anyway, but make sure to read the fine print. Items like bread and pastas are more difficult to find, but most grocery stores now carry gluten-free products alongside the traditional formulations.
Step2
Look for less-processed foods. Chips, pastries, cookies and crackers are usually full of gluten. If you want to indulge your child in such treats, learn how to make your own at home using gluten-free flour and other products.
Step3
Ask for allergen information when eating out. For many, the idea of trying to deal with celiac disease while eating out can seem like a nightmare. Most major restaurant chains have pamphlets available with information concerning menu items and allergens, which can steer you in the right direction when ordering.
Step4
Have your child wear a medical alert bracelet and educate him on the things that he can and can't eat. Children as young as five can learn what they can and can't eat, so make sure talk to him about his disease. Educate caregivers and family members on celiac disease, too, so they can help him make the right food choices.
