How to Cope With Duchene Muscular Dystrophy

Duchene Muscular Dystrophy (DMD) is a muscle wasting congenital disorder that affects boys. Currently there is no cure, so finding ways to cope with DMD is important. Take proactive steps to help improve joint function, delay muscle deterioration and improve quality of life.

Instructions

1. Calm DMD symptoms with physical therapy and regular exercise. The therapy exercises decrease muscle contractions, and walking and standing helps avoid or delay curvature of the spine.

2. See an occupational therapist to learn ways to eat, play, dress and handle daily tasks and activities.

3. Wear braces or splints on the legs to help slow reoccurring contractions. Seek surgery for scoliosis to reduce pain and help the child sit up so breathing is improved.

4. Receive respiratory care for deep breathing and coughing treatments. Use special breathing devices to cope with advanced DMD.

5. Take medications and vaccinations to prevent infections and slow muscle weakness progression. Corticosteroids are anti-inflammatory drugs believed to increase muscle mass and strength.

6. Modify the surroundings to cope with DMD. Use a ramp, special school desktop, raised toilet seats, special shower chair, cane and a powered wheelchair.

7. Attend emotional support programs designed for caregivers, families and the DMD child. Seek help to learn more coping techniques.
