Plantar fasciitis is a painful but common ailment that affects many. Occasionally called heel spurs or heel spur syndrome, plantar fasciitis causes severe pain in the heel. Since plantar fasciitis is the inflammation of the tissue supporting the arch of the foot, proper shoes are important in treatment and prevention of this syndrome. Choosing correct shoes to help with this painful condition can be an important step to recovery.

Difficulty: Easy
Instructions
  1. Step 1

Get your foot sized. It's vital that you are wearing the correct sized shoes, to both treat and prevent plantar fasciitis. Shoes that are too small can actually cause plantar fasciitis.

  2. Step 2

Make sure the shoe bends in the correct position. For proper support during walking, your shoe should bend at the ball of the foot when your press the toe area of the shoe while supporting the heel. If it bends farther back towards the heel, it can't effectively support your foot.

  3. Step 3

Ensure the shoe connects to your heel. Only wear sandals if they have a strap that attaches to your heel and avoid flip flops, open back shoes or slippers.

  4. Step 4

Look for shoes with cushioned, flexible midsoles that absorb the impact of your walking or running. You should replace these types of shoes regularly to ensure the maximum shock absorption.

  5. Step 5

Consider insoles or orthotics. These provide arch support that help the plantar fascia heal and prevent further injury and irritation. You can also tape your arch with athletic tape to provide some support.
