Prescription drug abuse is a serious issue in the United States that is largely overlooked by the government and the media. Since the pills were originally prescribed by a doctor, it is easy for addicts to justify their use and hard for law enforcement to detect abuse. Vicodin is one of the most addictive prescription drugs around, but you can fight it with hard work.

Instructions

Difficulty: Challenging
Step1
Recognizing your problem is the first step to battling addiction. It is easy to deny a problem with vicodin addiction because a doctor prescribes it. Chances are you once had a legitimate need for the prescription. Signs of addiction are when you are no longer in pain and are still taking the pills or if you resort to alternative methods to obtain pills.
Step2
Get professional help. An addiction is often more powerful than one person. There are many places where one can get treatment. Narcotics Anonymous is a good place to start. There are many local church and community organizations that can help you get help.
Step3
Detoxification is the first and most painful step to recovery. Withdrawal is very painful for vicodin addiction because the body has become used to it. Expect to be irritable and your body to be very sore.
Step4
Establish new routines. Most recovering addicts relapse by returning to their old habits. Hanging out with the people that you used with and frequenting places where drugs are available will likely lead to a relapse.
Step5
Remember never to let your guard down. When you recover, it is important to remember that an urge to use again can happen at any time. Your doctor should be aware not to prescribe pain medications unless absolutely necessary.
