Whether you've moved into a new home and need a quick outdoor landscape installed or you simply don't want to spend a lot of money on landscaping, here is a quick and easy way to make fake rocks with foam sealant.

Instructions

Difficulty: Easy

Things You’ll Need:

  • Mask
  • Goggles and gloves
  • Foam sealant
  • Cardboard or newspaper
  • Plastic or paper bags
  • Utility knife
  • Sand
  • Outdoor paint
Step1
Put on your protective gear. Although non-toxic foam sealants do exist, most brands contain toxic chemicals, have irritating scents, can cause injury to the eyes, skin or mucus membranes and "flash" burn if accidentally ignited.
Step2
Spray the high expansion foam sealant into your desired rock form shape on a piece of newspaper or cardboard in the same way that you would spray whipped topping onto a dessert. Estimate your size after the first small amount expands as a little foam goes a long way. For unique rock formations, you can also spray the foam into a paper or plastic grocery bag (if approved by the sealant manufacturer in the material warnings sections), quickly close the bag around the foam and then push in the sides of the bag to create your forms.
Step3
Dry the form(s) for 12 to 24 hours or longer depending on the sealant's drying instructions.
Step4
Carve out a hole in the middle of your form and fill with a bag of sand to give your rock weight so that the wind can't blow it away. As some sealants dry literally "rock hard," you may want to test your form(s) some time during the first 3 hours (the drying instructions will advise you of the amount of time that it takes for your foam sealant to set) and carve it while it is only semi-firm.
Step5
Seal the carved out section of the rock form(s) with more foam after the rock form(s) has set and the sand is inserted.
Step6
Paint your rock form(s) with outdoor paint to provide a protective seal against the elements and to give the form(s) a realistic appearance.
