Things You'll Need:

  • Gum paste
  • Rolling pin
  • Cornstarch
  • Food dye
  • Knife
  • Mold
  • Egg whites
  • Alcohol or water
  1. Step 1

Buy or make your gum paste. Gum paste has a fairly simple recipe, but you can also buy it from a cake supply store or website.

  2. Step 2

Dust your workspace, rolling pin and hands with cornstarch. The starch prevents the paste from sticking to the table or board.

  3. Step 3

Work the gum paste with your hands if it becomes dry. If it doesn't become pliable, add a small piece of fresh gum paste and knead them together. Separate your gum paste into as many sections as you want colors. Dye each section a different color by kneading in paste food dye.

  4. Step 4

Roll the gum paste out into a thin sheet. Dust the top of the paste with cornstarch before using the rolling pin on it. Cut the sheet into pieces using either a knife or cookie cutters. You can make simple, flat fruits this way.

  5. Step 5

Press the gum paste into a mold that you have dusted with cornstarch. Cut any excess gum paste off the mold with a sharp tool.

  6. Step 6

Allow the gum paste to dry, either on a flat, nonstick surface or in the mold. The amount of time it takes to dry depends on the thickness of the paste.

  7. Step 7

Use egg whites to attach pieces to each other. You can also paint dried gum paste with food dye. Mix paste dye with a few drops of either alcohol or water to use it as paint.
