Operating a traditional tape measure to measure a wall or window is awkward for one person to successfully use alone. However, using a digital tape measure helps reduce some of the uncertainty associated with having to hold the tape measure while reading the measurement.

Things You'll Need:

  • Digital tape measure
  1. Step 1

Test different models of digital tape measures before purchasing one. Read reviews of other users to learn how well each tape measure operates in action. Look for a tape measure that measures in a variety of units; feet, inches, meters, millimeters or centimeters.

  2. Step 2

Put the digital tape measure at one end of what you need to measure. Pull the tape measure to the other end or the ending point of what you are measuring. The actual measuring is similar to using a traditional tape measure, but with a digital one you read the measurement on the LCD panel instead of trying to guesstimate the fractions.

  3. Step 3

Store your measurement in the memory of the digital tape measure. Also, make calculations like adding in the memory. Recall these measurements at the hardware or hobby store when you buy supplies for your project.

  4. Step 4

Record a message on your digital tape measure if that option is available. The Bob Vila tape measure offers this feature (see Resources). Much like storing calculations in the memory, the voice recorder allows you to store information that you use at the hardware store buying lumber or at the craft store buying fabric.
