How to Calculate Pedal Height for a Bike

Experts have argued for years about the best formula for determining the optimal placement of the body to the pedals of a bicycle. Many different formulas resulted from these arguments, but one element they all agree on is that you must start with a correct inseam measurement and proper seat-to-frame ratio. This method was developed by three-time Tour de France winner Greg LeMond.

    Instructions

      • 1

Measure your inseam from the highest point possible between the legs to the floor. It's best to take several measurements and then average them for the most accurate measurement possible.

      • 2

Calculate 88.3 percent of your inseam length. Simply multiply your inseam by .883 or use an online percentage calculator like the one found on the Math website.

      • 3

Adjust your bike seat so the distance between the center of the seat's bottom bracket to the top of the seat is 88.3 percent of your inseam length.

      • 4

        Sit on the adjusted seat.

      • 5

Make sure the bike is level to the ground.

      • 6

Hang one leg straight down while seated on the bike. Place the ball of your foot straight over the center of the pedal spindle.

      • 7

Adjust the pedal height so the ball of your foot rests lightly on the center of the pedal.

    Tips & Warnings

    • Avoid the temptation to make the distance between the pedals and seat too short. The extra work required of your body to pedal a bike when this distance is too short significantly reduces the length of time you can pedal before you reach muscle fatigue.
