How to Clean a Mascot Costume

Cleaning your mascot costume is more a matter of consistency and commitment than anything else. Your costume needs to be cleaned regularly because nothing could be worse for team spirit and crowd interaction than a stinky mascot. Costumes start smelling musty (or worse) when you don't maintain them properly.

Instructions

    • 1

Inspect your costume after every performance to see if any rips or tears have occurred or if anything noticeable was spilled on it. As the crowd interacts with you, it's highly likely that soda, nacho cheese and ice cream are getting dumped on you by kids and over-enthusiastic fans.

    • 2

See if you can work out any stains with a carpet cleaner or other specialty cleaner. Repair any rips or tears by either getting handy with a needle and thread or finding someone who is. Your costume is now ready for Step 3.

    • 3

Take your costume to a dry cleaner after every game. Bacteria accumulates inside the costume as you sweat. It's the bacteria that causes the stinky smell that often occurs in clothing. The only way to ensure its removal is through dry cleaning.

    • 4

Spray down your costume with End-Bac if you can't clean it after a game due to timing or budget constraints. Make sure you allow it sufficient time to dry.

Tips & Warnings

  • Don't overuse antiperspirant. Your body will be sweating in the costume; this is a given. If you're tired of cleaning it, trying to make yourself not sweat is a bad idea. Your body needs to sweat to deal with the heat.
