How to Sketch Floor Plans
When you decide to begin a building project, one of the first things you'll need to do is create a floor plan. If you already have the exterior of a building designed, it's best to sketch a floor plan to scale using graph paper. While you're creating the floor plan, designate areas for doorways, windows and stairs.

1
Draw a basic outline of the rooms with blank drawing paper. This will give you an initial idea of where you want rooms to be and how much space you'll have for countertops or windows depending on the room you're building.
-
2
Use 1/4-inch graph paper to convert the original sketch to graph paper. Each 1/4-inch square represents one square foot in the drawing. If the room you're building is 12 feet by 20 feet, draw it on the sketch paper the same way: 12 (1/4-inch) boxes by 20.

3
Sketch straight lines where the walls will be. Leave an opening approximately 3 feet, or 3 boxes, open for each doorway. You can also draw a curved line to represent which way a door would swing open.
-
4
Mark windows with small dash marks perpendicular to the walls. This will help you in determining the supplies needed.

5
Create countertops in kitchens and bathrooms by drawing out from the walls 2 feet in depth. This will be a close approximation to the standard depth of countertops. When marking these types of rooms, you can also sketch where the sinks, stove and dishwashers will be placed.
-
6
Fill in the sketch with furniture drawn to scale. Use a tape measure to measure the furniture you currently have or will be using to get an accurate layout. This will help you determine if you need different furniture and the best placement once the room is finished.
