With a petit mal seizure, also known as an absence seizure, you experience a short lapse in consciousness. This epileptic seizure can occur in adults, but occurs more often in children. Since you lose consciousness for several seconds, you do need to learn how to cope with petit mal seizures.

Difficulty: Moderate
Instructions
  1. Step 1

Wear an emergency bracelet. In case you suffer a seizure, you or your child should wear a medical alert bracelet containing your name and emergency contact information. You may also want to include current medications you are taking.

  2. Step 2

Keep away from flashing lights. Although most petit mal seizures may come out of nowhere, flashing lights can bring on a seizure. If a child suffers from petit mal seizures, you may want to limit video game play and television watching.

  3. Step 3

Avoid activities that can prove unsafe. With a history of petit mal seizures, you should stop swimming or driving. If you have a seizure while participating in these activities, you can suffer a serious accident.

  4. Step 4

Ask your doctor about anti-seizure medications. Petit mal seizure medications prescribed include Depakane and Zarontin. Your petit mal seizures may stop occurring while taking these drugs.
