Difficulty: Moderately Easy
Step1
Think up the name that you want to register. There are many names out there and so to ensure that you get one that you like, spend the time to think about the name. Consider spelling and alternatives to the normal spelling. From a marketing point of view, something that is memorable will be more valuable to you than something that is long or hard to remember.
Step2
Investigate a number of companies that offer a domain name registration program. Although they may advertise a low price, find out what you are getting with the registration. Many sites offer a small amount of space to host your site and even offer user-friendly web design tools to those who buy their domain registration service.
Step3
Decide on the company and sign up with them. Most of these websites have a "whois" lookup service that will tell you if someone already has that name registered. Remember that your domain can end in .com, .us, .org and .info to mention a few. It is wise to purchase all that you think will be attractive to purchase by others that want your name. If they purchase another name ending, it is possible the public will get confused and you may lose business to the other domain name.
Step4
Pay the registration fee and provide all the owner's details and contact information to ICANN that you own a domain name. Your domain name is useful for a private site or for a commercial site to represent your company and possibly to sell products. Once you have completed the purchase process, they will provide you with information as to how to find your site and how to logon to it. Now you can begin to build your site.
