2. Shop online to find designs you can't find in craft departments. Many websites exist solely to sell wedding stationary and accessories, so you should be able to find the perfect design and color scheme.

3. Buy extra items such as vellum, ribbon, confetti or ink stamps to further personalize the invitations. When there are only so many pre-designed kits to choose from, adding your own touch can really set your invitations apart.

4. Choose a design that lets your guests know how formal your wedding is--gold accents and intricate patterns show a much different feel than pop-art pink and black flowers and polka dots. Take some time in picking the invitations that best fit your theme.

5. Purchase extra product in case you mess up a few invites. It's always best to have more than you need for those accidents such as your printer smudging or misspellings of a guest's name.

• For an even cheaper version of wedding announcements, purchase kits made for everyday card mailing and use ink stamps to decorate them. If your wedding is simple, there's no reason your invitations can't be simple as well.
