Math students are often required to write papers, just as they do in other classes. The best-looking papers are those that are word processed, but inserting mathematical equations requires extra work. Most word processing programs include the ability to write out equations instead of inserting hand-written equations in an otherwise neatly word processed paper.

Difficulty: Moderately Challenging
Instructions
  1. Step 1

Use typographical symbols available on the keyboard for simple equations. The symbols for addition, subtraction and multiplication exist on the keypad or number row of the keyboard. Other symbols such as parentheses can also be found.

  2. Step 2

Insert mathematical symbols by using one of the alternate symbols sets available in your word processor. Symbols sets such as ASCII, typographic or math and scientific sets may contain the symbols you need.

  3. Step 3

Learn to use the equation editor. In Wordperfect, begin by using the Insert menu and choosing "equation," which will open the equation editor. In Microsoft Word, open the Insert menu and choose "object," then click on the equation editor.

  4. Step 4

Buy a program such as MathType which works with your word processor to help you write out equations. MathType is available in school bookstores and online, where you can order a CD-ROM or download the software.
