How to Write a Touching Story

There are specific tips you can use to be successful in your story writing. Start with a sympathetic main character, introduce a problem for him to solve and figure out how he'll solve it. Use situations that tug at the heart strings to make your story touching.

Instructions

1. Write what you know. Think about a story or situation that occurred in your own life that you can write confidently. Or, imagine what your reaction would be in a fictional situation to make your story feel authentic.

2. Use situations most people can relate to, such as the death of a close relative or the pain of a long separation. Choosing situations many people can relate to will help your story touch a wider audience.

3. Listen to the way people talk in everyday life and make sure the dialog you write in your story is similar. Kids should talk like kids and adults should speak appropriately.

4. Channel the strongest emotions you've personally felt and create a touching story that uses those emotions. For example, you can draw on the fear and pain of labor and the overwhelming joy of holding your baby for the first time.

5. Use writing exercises to help strengthen your storytelling ability. If you have trouble getting started, pick a random phrase and construct a touching story around it. Flip open a book or a magazine and use the first several words you see as the prompt for this exercise.
