You don't need to pay a professional hundreds of dollars for a photograph of yourself. More people are choosing to take self portraits for web or print use. Follow some techniques to make your photograph flattering and you'll have an abundance of photos to share with others.

Instructions

Difficulty: Moderate

Step1
Use a tripod. While you can set your camera on a table or countertop in a pinch, a tripod will hold it securely and you have room to see through the viewfinder when composing the self portrait.
Step2
Decide on the background for your photo. As long as the lighting is sufficient, this can be just about anywhere. Keep in mind, however, that a busy background may detract from your face. If you want the picture to be a record of your travels, you'll want the background featured prominently.
Step3
Put an object where you will sit for the self portrait and focus on it.
Step4
Take a test shot and check the picture to make sure it is well illuminated and in focus. Check the lighting and the white balance.
Step5
Select the "Portrait" mode on a digital camera to open the aperture and create a shallower depth of field, resulting in a photo that focuses on your face and softly blurs the background. This is especially good for boudoir photos.
Step6
Set the auto-timer on your camera and scurry to your pre-determined place. Smile and let the camera take the shot.
Step7
Experiment with different camera angles for a more flattering photo. Elevating the camera slightly will cause you to tilt your head upwards, reducing the appearance of a double chin and under eye bags.

Tips & Warnings

  • Find a remote shutter release for your digital camera in order to shoot as many photos as you like without having to get up and reset the camera each time.
