Step 1
Measure your attic. Choose a fan with the right voltage for your space. Generally, a 10 watt unit can vent up to 1200 square feet. A 20 watt unit can vent up to 2000 square feet.
-
Step 2
Choose the right fan for your roof type. Fans mount to pitched or flat roofs. A minimum amount of roof vents may be required. Check the specs to determine where the fan must be mounted. If in doubt, choose a fan that can mount to any roof type.
-
Step 3
Look for a rugged stainless steel or aluminum construction with a screen to protect from animals. Choose gray or neutral colors, rather than dark colors that act as a heat sink.
-
Step 4
Read the installation instructions. Determine whether you need to hire a contractor to install the fan. If you hire a contractor, ask for fan recommendations.
-
Step 5
Compare prices among manufacturers, models and suppliers. Higher voltage fans are more expensive than those with lower voltages.
-
Step 6
Decide whether you want a fan with a thermostat. Some solar powered attic fans run while the sun is bright and turn off when it's dark or cloudy. Others switch on when the attic reaches a specific temperature. Choose the right type for your environment. Buy a switch for an additional fee.
