Gymnastics combines the artistry of dance with acrobatic feats that at times defy gravity. In optional competitions, gymnasts must perform a routine that has been choreographed for them. Balance beam choreography must feature the required elements and combine artistic elements to earn the best score. Here are some tips for choreographing a winning balance beam routine.

Instructions

Difficulty: Easy
Step1
Choreograph first on a taped line on the floor, then move to a low balance beam. This allows the gymnast to connect the elements of the routine and learn it without worrying about falling.
Step2
Pay attention to the time allowed for a routine. The maximum time allotted is 90 seconds, after which the judges will begin to deduct points for going overtime.
Step3
Make sure you include the required elements for the level at which the gymnast is competing. They may include a leap, a 180-degree turn and a scale, required acrobatic skills and the mount and dismount. United States Gymnastics Federation rules determine the elements required for all routines.
Step4
Use the entire length of the balance beam several times. The judges may deduct points if the gymnast does not use the whole beam completely.
Step5
Build in easy dance moves that allow the gymnast to take a breather before the next tumbling move. Allow the gymnast to be included in deciding the dance moves, and make sure her routine reflects her personality and abilities.
Step6
Connect the moves in the routine so that each element flows into the next. The routine should be fluid and enjoyable to watch, not choppy.
