How to Read Truth in Body Language

Even when your date doesn't want to communicate, his body language is doing it for him. Reading his body language helps you learn whether he is telling the truth or not. It can reveal how he is feeling and how he feels about himself.

Watch your date's eyes. Many people have trouble looking a person in the eyes when they are lying. Like many body language clues, however, this isn't foolproof. Many liars make it a point to look into the person's eyes so as to appear to be telling the truth. Knowing a little about your date can help. If she is generally truthful but is suddenly not looking you in the eyes, chances are good she's lying. Eyes that are shifty, constantly moving around the room, may also indicate a lie.

Notice whether the person is touching his face. This is one of the easiest signs to read because it is usually involuntary. Someone lying will often touch her nose and mouth. Some people cover their mouths with their hands or with a finger. Scratching the nose is another classic sign of a lie. Lying often increases blood flow to the vessels in the face, which can make it itch.

Watch for crossed arms, which are a sign of being closed. If your date says she will consider something but then crosses her arms, she is probably lying. Crossed arms sometimes mean a person is nervous about what is being said and is closing off to remain safe.

Curling the lips downward at the corners and wrinkling the nose are body language signs of deceit. These gestures can be small and fleeting, but noticing them will help you read whether the person is being truthful.
