Coontail hair is a section of hair that has stripes like a racoon's tail. This style is being worn by scene kids who want a new twist to the emo, goth or other scene hairstyles. Coontail stripes are usually blond and dark brown or black, but they can be done with any contrasting color.

Instructions

Difficulty: Easy

Things You’ll Need:

  • Flat iron
  • Thin tape
  • Hair dye
  • Shampoo
Step1
Start with straight hair. If your hair is not already straight, straighten it with a flat iron. The hair should also be clean and dry.
Step2
Separate the section that will have the coontail stripes. Wrap a thin tape like Scotch tape around the stripes that will remain the original color. If your hair is naturally blond, the wrapped stripes will remain as is and the hair left free will be dyed darker. If you are brunette, the hair left free will be bleached.
Step3
Mix your hair dye according to the package instructions. Use rubber gloves to protect your hands and apply the dye to the stripes that have been left free. This can be done with your gloved hand or you can use a small makeup brush to make the lines more precise and keep it from seeping underneath the tape.
Step4
Leave the dye on for the time specified on the package. When the time is up, rinse off as much of the dye as you can. Go to the shower and wash your hair of whatever dye remains. Take the tape off once the dye has been washed out. Let your hair dry and admire your coontail. If you want to dye the part that had been taped, wait for your hair to dry and then repeat the process.
