Difficulty: Moderately Easy
Step1
Visit your local Small Business Administration. This government agency has several tools for beginning entrepreneurs. The Office of Small Business Development Centers provides counselors to help design a business plan step-by-step. The SBA also has free online courses for all aspects of business. Take the introductory business courses before beginning your business plan. The SBA also has a business library with many free brochures, booklets and forms.
Step2
Contact the Service Corps of Retired Entrepreneurs (SCORE). Part of the Small Business Administration SCORE counselors come from different industries and have decades of business experience. You can find them in most major cities and on the Internet, and look for a SCORE mentor with a background in your same industry. Create a list of questions and take notes during each mentoring session.
Step3
Check with your local library for books on business start-ups and business-plan preparations. Local business owners periodically give presentations at libraries. Ask the librarian for details.
Step4
Visit your Chamber of Commerce. Talk with business owners about their experiences doing business in your town. Chat with professionals in as many industries as possible. Read paperwork on membership benefits.
