How to Survive a Haunted Attraction

Haunted houses and other attractions are increasingly popular each Halloween. Plan to go earlier in October to avoid long lines or "jump fees," which allow you priority entrance despite lengthy wait times. Since many haunted attractions are located in remote areas, get good directions before setting out on your quest for the scare of your life.

1. Agree to go to the haunted attraction only out of a personal desire to do so. Stand up to peer pressure in the event there are concerns. Understand that people have varying tolerances for such activities and that not everyone enjoys them.
2. Plan the trip to the haunted attraction as a group activity. Buddy up with a good friend who is willing to stay close and hold hands. Ask ahead of time about the details of the trip through the house.
3. Enjoy the suspense of the haunted attraction, but keep hold of the fact that it's not real. Think about the activities planned for after the haunted house as a distraction from the intensity.
4. Remember that the point of the haunted attraction is for everyone to have fun. Resist the temptation to run around screaming and being hysterical. Smile and laugh as much as possible to ease others around you.
5. Stay in the middle of the group as it moves through the haunted attraction to avoid the brunt of the scares. Focus on the fun of others if the activities get too intense. Watch the time and know that the experience ends soon.
6. Follow the trip to the haunted house with dinner out, shopping or another calm activity that returns things to normal. Refocus on friends and the rest of the evening.

Tips & Warnings

• Nearly all haunted attractions have a "chicken out" escape route for participants who don't care to finish the tour. Ask for help.
• Remember that the haunted attraction actors must abide certain rules, which include no touching or grabbing, and that they may not be touched or grabbed. Follow the rules.
