How to Stay Out of an Argument

People argue all the time but the best way to steer clear of an argument between two or more people is to stay out of one. You may want to help another person out or even defend yourself, but it's wise to stay away. Read on to learn how to stay out of an argument.

Instructions

    • 1

Assess the situation. Ask yourself if the talk is escalating or starting to get out of control. If voices are being raised and anger growing, then you are in the beginnings of an argument.

    • 2

Stay calm. Don't shout or yell back and don't throw any punches. Recognize that a person might be saying things in order to get you angry. Don't let them push your buttons.

    • 3

Tell the person arguing that it's best to continue the talk when you are both calmer. Don't let them see you mad or upset. Try not to show emotion either way. Let them know that you refuse to argue with them.

    • 4

Walk out of the room if you have to. The best way to avoid getting angry is to not listen to the things being said. If you can remove yourself from the situation, do so. Go for a walk, meditate or do anything that helps to calm yourself down as well.

    • 5

Come back later for discussion when things are calmed down. Explain to them that you weren't accomplishing anything earlier by arguing and that you'd like to work things out now when you are both able to talk reasonably.
