A rear hold is a position from which you may want to use a self-defense technique. While there are many ways to get free from a rear hold if someone grabs you from behind, including leg and foot breaking, one of the easiest ways is a hip throw. Most self-defense moves for a rear hold have the same elements--hand control, shift in weight and quick movement. Read on to learn how to use self-defense against a rear hold.

Difficulty: Challenging
Instructions
  1. Step 1

Bring your hands up and place them over your attacker's hands, which should be around your chest or midsection. Find the attacker's thumb and start to gain control of the thumb, though you're not peeling the hand away yet.

  2. Step 2

Drop your body by widening your stance and bending your knees. In one motion, drop and move to the side of your attacker, pushing out with your arms if you need more leeway to move.

  3. Step 3

Lean slightly forward to force your attacker to lean forward as well. Position yourself so that one leg and hip are behind your attacker's leg.

  4. Step 4

Use your position to throw your attacker backwards over your hip using leverage from your upper body and hip. Your attacker should let go, but maintain control over the hand in case he doesn't let go.

  5. Step 5

Fall backwards onto your attacker if he does not let go, and quickly peel the hand away before he has a chance to grab you again with his legs or arms. It is imperative that you break his grip as he falls or immediately as he hits the ground, before he has a chance to collect himself and counter your escape.

Tips & Warnings
  • Do not attempt to use self-defense techniques unless you have experience with martial arts and have practiced them extensively.
