One of the main self-defense moves you should learn involves protecting yourself when a person grabs you from behind. If you're walking alone, you make yourself vulnerable to being attacked from behind. A quick reaction might keep you out of harm's way. Read on to learn how to use self-defense against a grab from behind.

Difficulty: Moderate
Instructions
  1. Step 1

Move your elbows out. When you first feel someone grab you from behind, stick both your elbows out straight to the sides.

  2. Step 2

Drive an elbow it into your attacker's ribs. Once you raise your elbows, you should have enough room to throw one of the elbows back into the person's lower ribcage.

  3. Step 3

Get out of the arms of the attacker. If you elbow the attacker hard enough in the ribs, you should be able to slip out of his arms.

  4. Step 4

Grab the person's hand. If the attacker's still trying to grab at you as you make your escape, grip her right hand.

  5. Step 5

Go under his arm and then twist his arm to the back of his body. This puts you in a controlling position and allows you to either call for help or make an escape.

Tips & Warnings
  • You can use other self-defense techniques to protect yourself from a rear attack. Options include throwing your head back against the attacker's and stomping very hard on her feet to stun her.
  • You may just run away if you've stunned your attacker enough for him to let you go. If you continue to fight with him, you may put yourself at risk for injury.
