Rollerblading is a good sport for folks of all ages and fitness levels. Getting started on in-line skates will take just an afternoon of practice. But first, you have to be able to stand up on rollerblades. Read on to learn how to stand up on rollerblades.

From Quick Guide: Rollerblading
Difficulty: Easy
Instructions
  1. Step 1

Put on your skates first in your living room, carpeted or grassy area. Sit on a firm chair and lace up or latch your skates to fit comfortably around your ankles and calves. Your skates will be snug but shouldn't be tight.

  2. Step 2

Plant both feet on the ground and rise to a standing position. Hold on to something waist high if you wish.

  3. Step 3

Balance on both feet with your weight on the balls of your feet. Shift your weight a little forward and back to get used to the way your boots feel.

  4. Step 4

Return to a sitting position keeping your balance forward toward your toes to keep your feet from rolling out from underneath you.

  5. Step 5

Move to a cement surface to practice standing up and staying still. Put on your skates and all your protective gear. Again start out on a firm chair, bench or step. Stand up keeping knees firm and feet at a 90 to 45 degree angle to keep from rolling.

  6. Step 6

Return to a sitting position keeping your feet at an angle and your weight toward your toes.

Tips & Warnings
  • Be careful around incline surfaces. Even slightly sloping sidewalks can be difficult to navigate for a beginner. If you start to roll, head toward a grassy area to stop yourself.
  • Bring a friend to help you stand up. Your friend should not be wearing skates but should offer a firm arm to guide you along.
