Updating extensions in Firefox is an important part of keeping Firefox functional and security risk free. Upgrading a Firefox extension may even fix existing bugs and streamline your web browsing experience. Use the following tips to update extensions in your Firefox browser.

Difficulty: Moderately Easy
Instructions
  1. Step 1

Click on "Tools" and "Add-ons." Select "Find Updates" and allow Firefox to check for updates. If an available update pops up on the window, check "Include this Update" and press "Install Updates." Let Firefox install the update before closing the Firefox browser and restarting it.

  2. Step 2

Make sure your Firefox browser automatically checks for extension updates in the future. Select "Tools" and "Options" from Firefox's browser menu. Choose "Advanced" select the "Update" tab. Find the "Automatically Check for Updates" section of the tab and verify that the "Installed Add-ons" portion of the tab is checked. Click "OK."

  3. Step 3

Download and install the "Update Notifier" Firefox extension. When you install this extension, Firefox will automatically notify you of available extension updates by displaying icons in the Firefox browser, giving you the ability to manage your extension updates without having to click on the "Tools" menu or visit third-party websites.

  4. Step 4

Update your extensions regularly to minimize the amount of risks and security vulnerabilities in your browser. If you update your extensions manually, visit the official website of the extension often to keep up-to-date with the extension's developments.

Tips & Warnings
  • Consider browsing Firefox's Add-on section to find extensions with more features than the one you're currently using if an upgrade to your current extension doesn't work.
  • If you've upgraded Firefox to the latest version, some wxtensions may not be compatible with the latest release. Contact the creator of your extension and inquiry about an updated version of the extension if your extension doesn't work with a later version of Firefox.
