In most cases, you'll need to choose a pool cue based on your comfort level. As long as you can shoot well with the cue, the length doesn't matter much. However, if you're buying a pool cue or picking one out for a game, you should find the correct length in order to improve your odds of playing well. Read on to learn how to choose a pool cue length.

Difficulty: Moderately Easy
Instructions
  1. Step 1

Visit a billiards shop where you can look at the different lengths and types of pool cues in person.

  2. Step 2

Try a standard length first. Most pool players feel comfortable with a cue that has the standard length of 57 to 59 inches.

  3. Step 3

Adjust the pool cue length based on your height. If you're really tall or short, you may feel more comfortable with a pool cue that is slightly above or below average. For example, if you're over 6 feet tall you may feel more comfortable playing with a 60-inch pool cue. Players on the shorter side should try 52-inch pool cues.

  4. Step 4

Test the pool cue. Once you narrow down your choices of pool cues based on length, you'll want to see how well you shoot with the cue. Get into shooting position and knock a few balls around to see if the length suits you.

Tips & Warnings
  • Besides length, you'll have other considerations to make when choosing a pool cue. Consider the shaft of the cue and the tip as well. Shafts vary in material and come in different weights. Most pool cues have a standard tip size, but you can get a different size to use for special shots.
