How to Type With Long Fingernails

If you type often you may want to consider keeping your fingernails short to make typing easier and faster. However, if you insist on having long fingernails, there are ways you can keep them and still learn to type without frustrating yourself or cracking your nails. Read on to learn how to type with long fingernails.

Instructions

Difficulty: Easy
Step1
Use your fingertips to type instead of your nails to keep the nails from damaging your nails. If you tap your nail tips on the keys, you may end up causing stress to the nails which can break them.
Step2
Keep natural nails filed and clean. The healthier the nails are to begin with the better chance you have at keeping them healthy through typing.
Step3
Take extra care of artificial nails. Acrylics and press-on nails may fall off when you type, so be careful to type gingerly rather than harshly.
Step4
Practice typing slowly with long nails, doing a little at a time until you begin to feel more comfortable. Once you learn how to hold your fingers differently, you can type faster with fewer typos.
Step5
Stay away from products such as the iPhone and other small touch-screen interface electronics unless you feel comfortable with taking extra time to use them. Try the product before you buy it to see if you can use it with your long nails.

Tips & Warnings

  • Avoid extremely long nails if your job depends on you typing quickly and highly efficiently. If you type all day with long nails, you may spend more time backing up for typos and taking breaks to stretch your fingers than you would if you just kept your nails trimmed.
