Things You'll Need:

  1. Step 1

Measure the room to determine how much spray texture you will need. A large can covers approximately 60 square feet.

  2. Step 2

Experiment with a piece of cardboard or poster board before starting on the walls. You'll get an idea of the spray pattern and figure out what distance to hold the can to get the effect that you want.

  3. Step 3

Strip old wallpaper from walls, if necessary. Remove all the glue with trisodium phosphate. Spackle any holes. Allow the spackling compound to dry, then sand. Smooth and sand any rough patches on the wall.

  4. Step 4

Apply primer to the walls. Allow it to dry overnight.

  5. Step 5

Place tarps over the floor and any items in the room. Use painter's tape or masking tape to cover windows, trim and moldings.

  6. Step 6

Follow the manufacturer's directions on the spray gun to set it for the spray pattern you desire. Spray the texture on the walls with a sweeping motion. The walls don't need to be saturated. Cover 60 to 70 percent of the wall surface.

  7. Step 7

Allow the walls to set for 10 to 15 minutes. Place a drywall knife against the wall at a vertical angle. Move the knife gently in a downward direction so that it knocks off some of the splatter. Allow to dry for up to four hours, then paint the walls with latex paint.
