How to Use Less Electricity

Many thoughtful citizens are trying to limit their use of electricity as part of a greater conservation ideology. The world's finite resources won't always give us unlimited power. So here are some tips for using less electricity in your home.

Instructions

Difficulty: Challenging
Step1
Turn off lights when you're not using them. This is a big one and is obvious to many, but experts state time and time again that your electric bill can be cut down with attention to turning off bulbs in between use.
Step2
Shut down computers or put them "to sleep" when they're not in use. Just like with lights, limiting the running time of your computer can save you on energy consumption.
Step3
Fill up your freezer. It might seem weird, but when your freezer is full of food (or anything else frozen) the cold air is absorbed and held by the solid matter. When you open the freezer door, less cold air escapes.
Step4
Line dry clothes or use drying racks. Getting less work from your dryer unit is a big energy saver. This may be the number one tip for cutting down your energy use. Even if you can reserve larger garments for line drying, it will help make a dent in your use.
Step5
Get efficient appliances when possible. You might not have a lot of money for fancy new appliances, but sometimes, a strategic buy can help you with lower energy bills. Look to smaller and greener solutions for your home when it is time to buy.
