How to Buy Hard Drive Cleaner

Files remain on your PC's hard drive even after you think you've erased them. Even if you successfully erase unwanted files, a good hacker can still revive them with surprisingly little effort. A good hard drive cleaner needs to completely erase unwanted data and overwrite the newly freed space and the PC's unused white space in order for the drive to be completely sanitized.

Difficulty: Easy
Instructions
  1. Step 1

Learn what your cleaning options are. There are software programs that claim to clean your PC drive by overwriting the deleted file space three times, some five times, some to Department of Defense standards. Some include overwriting of PC's white space, while others don't. Perhaps more thorough than a software program are the newer cleaning hardware devices.

  2. Step 2

Decide what operations you want included in your cleaner's capability. If you want your drive cleaned so unwanted files are deleted beyond retrieval by even the most seasoned hacker, go with a hardware appliance like the new Erazer.

  3. Step 3

Search for product reviews of the software or hardware appliance you've chosen to see how it has performed for others. Digital Reviews is a good place to start.

  4. Step 4

Pay attention to the guarantees and warranties offered with the product you choose.

  5. Step 5

Order your chosen PC drive cleaner from the manufacturer.

  6. Step 6

Test the PC drive cleaner once you receive it to make sure it works properly. Address any concerns with the manufacturer immediately.
