How to Tell 40th Birthday Jokes

Just three words--"the Big 4-0"-- express so much to people who are having a 40th birthday. Staring down your forties might present some life challenges but it's nothing that a few tactful and well timed jokes can't take care of. Does this Spark an idea?

Instructions

Use exaggeration to ironically compare the 40th birthday with getting very old to show that 40 is actually pretty young. For example, take the old "over the hill" cliché and tell the birthday boy that he's not just over the hill but over the whole mountain range.

Make use of food and wine metaphors to show that aging is a good thing while still being funny. In this case, you can point out that if wine grows better with age, the 40th birthday boy would be a bottle of Dom Perignon. You can make similar jokes with aged cheese and liquors.

Point out that men who are turning 40 still act like they're 20, since nothing makes a 40-year-old man feel rejuvenated than being told he's got the spirit of a person half his age. If it's a woman who's turning 40, pretend that her age is half of what it really is and continue to tell the joke so that it becomes a running thing.

    • 4

Try to make the jokes funny but be prepared for a couple of duds, since age is a sensitive issue. When you do strike out with a 40th birthday joke that falls flat, point out that you're also getting old and imply that that's the reason your jokes aren't funny. In all cases, though, make another joke until you get your laugh.
