Linguistics is the fascinating study of how people use language in various situations. While the field is mostly thought of as academic, there are plenty of opportunities for linguistics internships in a variety of fields and sectors.

Difficulty: Moderately Challenging
Instructions
  1. Step 1

Brush up on at least a second language (through having a third language is preferable), since almost all linguistics internships and programs require that you have working knowledge of two or more languages. You can begin to study a new language even if you aren't proficient in it to prepare yourself for future linguistics internships and jobs.

  2. Step 2

Get as many letters of recommendation as you possibly can since these letters give you the credibility you need to land an internship, even if your linguistics credentials are not yet stellar. As you get your recommendations, ask you the people who are writing them if they have any contacts at local universities.

  3. Step 3

Begin your internship at local colleges and universities since these are the institutions that devote the most resource to linguistics. Speak one on one with a linguistics professor to offer your research assistance or any other help that the professor might need as a way to structure your own internship.

  4. Step 4

Look at sub-specialties that rely heavily on linguistics such as speech and hearing therapy. These therapy centers usually employ professional linguists and offer internship programs that give you a hands-on approach to the study of linguistics. Take a look at speech and language centers at universities or at medical clinics.
