Step 1
Start out by looking at local natural history museums, especially if you don't yet have a degree in anthropology. Many museums will train you to give tours or help with the museum's faculty. This way, you can get a hands-on internship without having to leave your area.
-
Step 2
Contact an anthropologist at a local college or university and offer to help out with any sort of work the professor may need assistance with. You don't need to have experience in anthropology to land an internship with a professor, but you do need to present yourself as professional, competent and responsible for an anthropologist to put her data in your hands.

Step 3
See what the Smithsonian Institution is offering in the way of internships since the Smithsonian's Anthropology Outreach Office regularly offers qualified students enriching internships and jobs. While a job or internship at the national museum is demanding, it's definitely worth your while.
-
Step 4
Head to the National Association for the Practice of Anthropology website for a listing of jobs and internships that are currently available. With this site or a site like San Francisco State University's Job and Internships in Anthropology Page you can apply for lots of different internships to increase your chances of getting something you want.
