AARP serves members more than 50 years old. Many of them are retired or disabled and have Medicare as their primary health insurance. Supplemental insurance, or Medigap, covers the areas that Medicare doesn't, such as dental and vision care or prescriptions. AARP has a program called Health Care Options that researched insurance for their members, making it easier to choose a supplemental insurance.

Difficulty: Easy
Instructions
  1. Step 1

Consider possible types of insurance coverage that may be less expensive and still meet your needs. If you determine that a supplemental plan is your best choice, go on to select the right policy for your needs.

  2. Step 2

Evaluate your out-of-pocket costs for health care each year. Estimate your potential costs for upcoming years, including those that may be covered by Medigap plans. Check the Medicare website to see a list of Medigap plans.

  3. Step 3

Examine the twelve different Medigap plans to determine which one has the exact coverage you want.

  4. Step 4

Compare the insurance companies selling Medigap plans in your state. Both your State Health Insurance Assistance Program (SHIP) and the AARP website have this information.

  5. Step 5

Choose the best insurer for your needs. If you choose the AARP Health Care Options, you can find the plans available in your state, along with applicable rates and premiums on the AARP Health Care website, and sign up for one there.

Tips & Warnings
  • Programs like the Medicare Savings Program, the Extra Help Program, Medicaid and others may be less expensive alternatives to a Medigap plan for you, depending on your income. Get information from your nearest Social Security Office about these programs to help you decide your best choice.
  • The Medicare website lists Medigap plans A through L. By law, an insurer can only sell you one Medigap policy.
