Pre-med classes are very difficult to complete. They require a lot of time and dedication that far exceeds that of other career choices. In order to succeed as a pre-med student, you must have an overwhelming desire to become a doctor or you will burn out before you finish your studies. Follow these steps to succeed as a pre-med student.

Complete your prerequisites for medical school. They may vary depending upon the medical schools you apply to, but they generally consist of one year of each of the following courses: biology, organic chemistry, general chemistry, English, calculus and biochemistry. All of the science courses require you to complete the lab portions congruently.

Make an educational plan with your pre-med counselor. He can help you arrange your courses in the order that you need to complete them. He will also take into consideration your current job or family commitments as a student when planning your schedule so as not to overload you.

Keep your grades up. The board of the medical school you apply to will review your grade point average, or GPA. Don't set yourself up for failure by taking more classes than you can handle to keep your grades up.

Volunteer at hospitals, burn centers, retirement homes, trauma centers or any other health related facility. Gain as much experience as you can in the medical field to succeed as a pre-med student. Log on to the website of the facility that interests you and fill out a volunteer application to gain knowledge and experience.

Pass the Medical School Admissions Test, also known as the MCAT. Prepare for MCAT by visiting the AAMC website and taking the practice tests available for the physical and biological sciences and verbal reasoning.

Prepare for your med-school interview. Learn what type of interview the medical school will use and practice it. There is the panel, blind, partial-blind, stress and open interviews that you need to pass to move forward in your medical education and career.
