Difficulty: Moderately Easy
Step1
Examine the color of each item of clothes under a good natural light. There is nothing worse than pairing together two different shades of black or gray because this highlights the fact that it is not one suit and looks obviously mismatched. Find the exact color match if you are using the same fabric.
Step2
Try on a patterned jacket with plain fabric suit pants. Pinstriped or checkered jackets can often look fine if paired with some pants that contain one of the colors found in the jacket. This will give you an edgier look than a plain suit, but if you can find a good match, it will make you stand out from the crowd for the right reasons.
Step3
Buy suit separates from the same collection. Many designers now make ranges that use the same style and fabrics and this gives you the freedom to wear a complete three-piece or just the pants and vest if you prefer. You can create many different looks by dressing them up or down and using conservative or bright colored shirts underneath.
Step4
Ensure you clean and press all your pieces before you wear them together. A common mistake with suit separates is to use an old jacket dug out from the back of the closet with a brand new pair of pants. No matter how well you match the fabric, creases or odor will always show, so spruce them up beforehand.
